Having a good summer so far?

We hope all of the current, former and future CMA students are having an excellent and relaxing summer so far. Several of our yearbook staffers just returned from the wonderful Bluegrass Yearbook Experience camp at Eastern Kentucky University. Some of our student journalists enjoyed the Exposure camp at Western Kentucky University.

If you’ve shot any interesting pictures or video this summer — or if you have any interesting stories to tell about your vacation adventures — please send them to manualredeye@gmail.com.

Manual Broadcast Class Wins at KHSJA

Manual broadcast journalism students took first place in two separate categories in this year’s Kentucky High School Journalism Association awards:

Riley Puckett, Jennie Morris & Lindsey Asher (Class of 2009) won first place for their short documentary “Illegal Dumping.”

Abby DeWeese & Lauren McKay (Class of 2010) won first place for their news package on the KEA third-party email block.

Congratulations to all of them!

Teacher Elizabeth Palmer named KY JEA State Director

Our own CMA teacher Elizabeth Palmer was named the Journalism Education Association Kentucky State Director at the JEA/NSPA annual spring convention in Portland, Oregon. As the director, Ms. Palmer will create a network of Kentucky journalism teachers interested in achieving high journalistic standards, and promote participation on the local, state, and national level in conferences and workshops.

Crimson yearbook takes home top national awards!

On March 19, 2010, the Manual Crimson yearbook took home the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Crown Award in a ceremony at Columbia University in New York City. The award was for the 2009 volume with the theme Slant.

This is the first time in history that a Kentucky book has claimed the Gold Crown, the coveted national prize for high school yearbooks and newspapers.

The yearbook also was awarded a Pacemaker Finalist Award by the National Scholastic Press Association on April 18, 2010 at the annual spring convention in Portland, Oregon. Congratulations, 2009 editors and staff!

Crimson Yearbook named a Pacemaker Finalist

The National Scholastic Press Association has named duPont Manual’s 2008-2009 Crimson yearbook as a finalist in the national Pacemaker competition.

This is the second national recognition the yearbook has received for its 2008-2009 volume, “Slant.” The other national recognition came from Columbia Scholastic Press Association, which named the Crimson a Crown finalist. The Crimson is the only yearbook in Kentucky to make the finalist list in either contest and one of a small number in the nation to receive both. The final results of the Pacemaker competition are expected in April; the Crown contest results will be announced in March.

Professional photo opportunities for CMA photographers

CMA is proud to announce that five of their photojournalism students, Josh Beal, Sally George, Lauren McKay, Tim Haag, and Patty Gray, along with photojournalism teacher Ms. Elizabeth Palmer, have been invited by the Kentucky Derby Festival to photograph festival events. Along with having their work displayed prominently on the Kentucky Derby Festival site, these individuals will receive press passes to all KDF events and photograph from behind the scenes.

In addition, members of the photojournalism class has been invited to exhibit their photos at the Housing Partnership Annual Dinner. The class will contribute photos around a theme: “What Home Means to You.” If sold, the proceeds will go to support HPI’s mission of improving Louisville families’ lives through education, preservation and development of affordable housing.
