2009-2010 Awards

March 6, 2010 – WKU Mark of Excellence Awards in Bowling Green, KY

We did very well for our first entries in the WKU statewide Mark of Excellence contest, broadcast journalism division:

  • 1st place for videography went to Kara Hancock and Taylor Steff for their story on Thoroughly Modern Millie (http://vimeo.com/8178452)
  • 2nd place for sports went to Trevor Griner and Mac Hahn for their story on Manual’s new football coach, Dr. Oliver Lucas (http://vimeo.com/9179911)
  • 3rd place for news went to Lauren McKay and Abby DeWeese for their story on the statewide block of 3rd party emails (http://vimeo.com/8769291)
  • 3rd place for features went to Monica Cunningham and Chelsea Loveland for their story on Gladys Hodges (http://vimeo.com/7894473)
  • And the winner of Most Valuable Broadcast Team Member went to Manual AM‘s Executive Producer Monica Cunningham.

November 15, 2009 – JEA Write-Off Contests at the NSPA Convention in DC

I am really pleased to pass along so much good news about our students. I’ll start with the results of the Journalism Education Association’s on-site journalism contests  at the National Scholastic Press Association convention in Washington DC this past weekend:

November 6, 2009 – WKU Mark of Excellence Awards

On Friday, Nov. 6, our 08-09 yearbook brought home the award for Best Overall Yearbook from the WKU state-wide yearbook contest for the second year in a row. We placed first or second in all contest categories, bringing home the following awards:

Best Overall Yearbook Layout/Design (1st)
Best Overall Yearbook Photography (1st)
Best Overall Yearbook Theme Development (1st)
Best Candid Feature Photo (1st)

In addition, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded the Gold Medalist rating (the highest possible) to last year’s Crimson. We also achieved the highest possible award from the National Scholastic Press Association: the All-American rating with five Marks of Distinction. Please congratulate last year’s yearbook students when you see them for excellent work that represents our school and the CMA department well!

2008-2009 Awards

March 2009 – Adviser of the Year

Congratulations to Elizabeth Palmer for being named the James L. Highland High School Media Adviser of the Year.

April 2009 – KHSJA State Awards

The Crimson yearbook won eight awards in the Kentucky High School Journalism Association state-wide competition for the 2007-2008 book:

  • 1st place for General Excellence Award
  • 1st place for Best Design
  • 1st place for Cover Design
  • 1st place for Photography
  • 1st place for Advertising Section
  • 1st place for Writing Style
  • 2nd place for Use of Graphics
  • 2nd place for Overall Coverage

A newspaper student also took home an award: second place in editorial cartooning for Tonais Bayless.

November 2008 – JEA Write-Off Contest at NSPA Convention in St. Louis, MO

At the National Scholastic Press Association’s fall convention in St. Louis, Junior Laura Valentine won a Superior award in the Newswriting category. Six other CMA students won honorable mentions in a variety of categories:

  • Senior Eric Burse won in Yearbook: Club Captions & Copywriting.
  • Senior Courtney Zellars won in Yearbook: Academic Captions & Copywriting.
  • Senior Holly Thompson won in Photography: Portfolio.
  • Senior Hayden Clark won in Videography.
  • Junior Lauren McKay won in Yearbook: Advertising.
  • Sophomore Nash Whaley won in Commentary.

Over 2000 students from around the country participated in the competition.

Manual’s debate team frequently wins recognition at local and national tournaments. Last season, our team swept the Jefferson County Debate League Championship; this year, we swept the first JCDL competition in September. See the debate site for more information.
