Summer is coming up – and for CMA students, this could mean opportunities to practice their skills in new contexts. Here are some workshops we recommend:

Ms. Palmer and Mr. Miller, CMA teachers, offer a summer journalism travel program called Summex. The trip to China includes service learning opportunities in addition to seeing the sights of Beijing, Jian, and Shanghai. For more information, go to the Summex website or email Ms. Palmer at liz.palmer@manualcma.com. The trip is open to students entering ninth grade in the fall to 2012 graduates. Non-Manual students are welcome to apply.

Indiana University offers high school student journalism workshops. You can stay on campus and study areas like sports writing, television news, and opinion writing. For more information, see their program website.

WKU has student journalism workshops in photojournalism, web-based, converged journalism, and film. Students stay on campus and eat meals in the student center. Ms. Palmer attended the photojournalism workshop with her students one year and enthusiastically recommends it. For more information, see their brochure.

WKU also has another program called Xposure, a fully-paid, two-week, application-only, intense program for students who want to practice writing, photojournalism, and publishing with a small teacher to student ratio. Manual has been lucky enough to send 1-3 students to Xposure every year. Though they haven’t released their summer materials, this typically takes place in early June. See Ms. Palmer if you would like to apply to this program!

Students on journalism staffs (yearbook, newspaper, multimedia, and broadcast) should be reminded that the summer will always include retreats, bootcamps, and other Manual-based workshops, mostly in July. These dates have not been set yet but keep in touch with your adviser when considering jobs and vacation plans.

Journalism 1 students should understand the following concepts:

The 9 principles & 7 yardsticks; the definition of mass communication; the origin of various mass media (newspapers, books, magazines, radio, TV) and their impact on the world, the United States, and each other (for example, demassification); and advertising & PR techniques (from class lectures & slideshows). You should have all of this information in your class notes.

Journalism 2 students should understand these concepts:

The 9 principles & 7 yardsticks (of course); the parts of news articles (nut graf, lead quote, background, etc.) and feature articles (big picture reporting, exploded moment, etc.); how to write in inverted pyramid/hard news style; the 4 Cs (conceive, collect, construct, correct); and techniques of correctness (grammar, spelling, punctuation, plus passive vs. active voice). Be ready to turn a dry “telling” sentence from a news article into a vivid “showing” sentence for a feature article.

The finals are scheduled as follows:

Red day Journalism 2=Wednesday December 14

White day Journalism 1=Thursday December 15

White day Journalism 2=Thursday December 15

Red day Journalism 1=Friday December 16

Each day will be preceded by a full class devoted to review.

Study effectively for the finals; don’t wait until the last minute and try to cram all the information into your brain the night before. Rewrite your class notes in outline form. Move from concept to detail. Get a study partner and meet with them regularly. Develop effective mnemonics.

I would say “good luck,” except excellent performance on the final is the result of deliberately planned effort, not luck. So … put forth your best effort!

The National Scholastic Press Assocation & the Journalism Education Association held their 2011 fall convention in Minneapolis over the weekend of November 18-20. Manual students were there to compete in on-site contests. The following students earned individual recognition at the convention while competing against over 1600 peers from around the world:

Julian Wright: Superior rating for Broadcast commentary

Kelsey McKim: Superior rating for Yearbook club copy/captions

Yazmin Martinez: Superior rating for Computer design: Photoshop art

Virginia Johnson: Excellent rating for Newsmagazine layout

Zoe Schaver: Excellent rating for Yearbook student life copy/captions

Eli Fosl: Excellent rating for Videography

Meagan Anderson: Excellent rating for Computer design: advertising

Seth Fischer: Excellent rating for Photography portfolio

Sadie Birchfield: Honorable mention for Literary magazine layout

Miranda Thompson: Honorable mention for Yearbook student life photography

Dave Carroll: Honorable mention for Broadcast news story

We knew in advance that some of our students had been nominated for other national awards, but we didn’t know exactly how well we had done until the awards ceremony on Saturday afternoon. Here are the results of these international contests:

Virginia Johnson won fifth place in the Newsmagazine Layout of the Year contest;

Sally George (class of 2011) won first place in the Sports Reaction Photo of the Year contest;

and the Manual RedEye staff won first place in the Multimedia Package of the Year contest!

(You can still see the package here: http://www.manualredeye.com/2011/02/11/breaking-news-egyptian-president-hosni-mubarak-resigns/ )

In addition to all of these incredible individual accomplishments, last year’s Crimson yearbook (with the “Canvas” theme) won fifth place in Best of Show and Manual RedEye won sixth place in Best of Show. Nominations for these awards are submitted at the convention itself; like the on-site contests, these represent the best of those actually present.

Last week we lost our beloved Clint Vaught, longtime speech teacher and acting coach at Manual and YPAS. Mr. Vaught taught the Oral Communication & Debate class in the CMA program, but he was more well known as the founder of the Young Actors Institute which he ran for nearly 25 years.

Our students expressed their joy in his life and their grief in his passing through their work on RedEye, our student-run multimedia web-based publication.

Our condolences go out to Mr. Vaught’s friends, family, colleagues, and current & former students. He was an unforgettable man who can never be replaced.
